After the big ice storm in April, our TBTC volunteers were clearing trails in the Dufferin Hi-Lands section of the Bruce Trail for several days. Then, six of our trail maintenance sawyers and helpers went to Lion’s Head to do more clean up work from May 8-9. They stayed two nights at the Bear Claw Inn in Lion’s Head and worked until they could do no more. We asked Trail Maintenance Director Laurent for a write-up to fill us in on the details. Little did we know he is a very accomplished poet, among him many other talents. Like Homer and his adventures in the Odyssey, read more to understand the journey of our trail crews in making our trails whole again…

The Bruce Peninsula Caper
Heard there was trouble up in the northern section
Huge storm damage, upon inspection
Trees down everywhere, an intimidating sight
Would take a lot of effort to make this right
The call went out for some assistance
But for southern folks to help, that’s a long distance
But Adam stepped up, said help them recover
All your expenses I will cover
Six volunteers stepped up, the duty was clear
Freed up two days, brought all their gear.
So off they went, booked the Bear Track Inn
Very nice folks there, treated them like kin
Early next morning. jumped out of bed
And hiked up to near LIons Head,
Fallen trees all over the place
But the gang worked at a steady pace
By the end of the day, the whole section was clear
And they all gave a hearty cheer.
The reward was the satisfaction, the true Bruce Trail creed
Of helping fellow “Trailers” in their time of need
So bring on the storms, ‘cause it’s quite clear,
We can fix the trails, have no fear
So hikers can do what they like best,
Knowing the volunteers will never rest.
