Sat Apr 5 Springle, Cutting Multi-Flora Rose 10 Volunteers
We are starting work to remove Multi-Flora Rose from along the Main Trail and the Todd Bardes Meadowlands ST. We will be using loppers, hedge-trimmers, and saws to cut the large (up to 10’ and longer) very thorny canes. Canes will be cut to approx 6-8” from the ground so that BTC staff can later paint them with herbicide to prevent regrowth.

Tues Apr 8 Duff Pit, Removing Scots Pine 10 Volunteers
We will be checking the areas where we cleared Scots Pine in the past several years and pulling up or cutting seedlings and saplings (2-3″ to 1-2′) that have grown from seed since we cleared the larger trees. Sawyers will be cutting a few much larger trees on the North Rim ST.

Adam Brylowski and Lyndsey Wilkerson from the BTC will join us in removing Multi-Flora Rose from along the Main Trail and the Todd Bardes Meadowlands ST. We will be using loppers, hedge-trimmers, and even chainsaws to cut the large and very thorny canes and BTC staff will paint the stumps with herbicides to prevent regrowth.

Sat Apr 19 Scotsdale Farm, Boot Brush Stations 6 Volunteers
2 Boot Brush Stations will be installed on Scotsdale Farm at access points to the Bruce Trail. 1 on the MT at Hwy 7 and 1 on the Bennett Heritage ST on the east side of 8th Line. We will be putting the framework pieces together, securing the frames to the ground and filling the frames in with stones.

Tues Apr 29 Springle, Cutting Multi-Flora Rose 10-15 Volunteers
This is the Rain Date for the April 15 work party. BTC staff, Adam Brylowski and Lyndsey Wilkerson, will join us if the April 15 work party was cancelled. We will continue to cut MFR using loppers, hedge-trimmers, and even chainsaws.

Depending on how much still needs to be cleared we will continue to remove Scots Pine but may start to pull Garlic Mustard in two locations on the property.

Sat May 10 Maple Ridge & Springle, Pulling Garlic Mustard 10 Volunteers
We will be pulling garlic mustard along the MT from Limehouse to the Ridge ST. The plants will be bagged and left to ‘cook’ for some time until the seeds are no longer viable. We will put back the Monarch watering stations for the summer, remove fencing on the wildflower plots planted in 2021 and remove any GM around the boot brush stations.

Sat May 17 Maple Ridge or Duff Pit, Pulling Garlic Mustard 10 Volunteers
We will follow up in the areas we started to pull garlic mustard earlier in the month and either continue along the trail or spread out on the property in areas where the GM has started to spread.

Tues May 20 Springle, American Chestnuts 6 Volunteers
We will be back on Springle to check the American Chestnut trees planted a few years ago. We’ll inventory how many survived the winter, cut back the grass to give them some space to grow and ensure the tree guards are properly placed to prevent the deer from eating the tips.

Tues Jun 3 Kerr, garbage cleanup 6 Volunteers
A rough trail will be cut around the property to make it easier for the land steward (Kerr is heavily overgrown with buckthorn and vines making it difficult to do a property inspection. We will work on clearing a couple of small dump sites.

If a work party is cancelled due to heavy rain or other circumstance, we will try to reschedule work to be done on these dates.
Please Note:
No experience is necessary and we welcome you to come on any of the work days. Students looking for community service hours are welcome to join us. Please let us know on which day or days you are interested in volunteering. More information regarding each work party will be sent closer to the actual date, with directions and any other relevant information, to all who have signed up for that day. Time: Work parties will usually meet at 9:30 am and are finished by 2:00 pm
What to Bring: Water and lunch or a snack, insect repellent, work or gardening gloves, a hat
Sunblock or rain gear depending on the forecast
Wear working clothes and a sturdy pair of boots or shoes, (no light running shoes or sandals please) or rubber or waterproof boots if required. You may want to bring a change of clothes or footwear if conditions are wet or muddy.
