Message from President Martha Schrader

Thank you for your confidence in me as your next incoming president of the Toronto Bruce Trail club. I have had the pleasure over the past few years to volunteer in a variety of roles and my first year on the board last year was a big education for me. I stepped in to help out where help was needed- a bit of Accounting, Volunteer Management, BTC Day and help sweep a few hikes with Tom & team.

We have a fantastic club – truly a community! And it is my goal to continue to build on that foundation with people, trust, transparency, fiscal accountability and a focus on the trail.

And it really is about our people. There are so many faces that pop into my mind when I think about our members and our volunteers.  Moving bridges, painting trees, at Limehouse Public School with Mrs. Williams class, a fall hike with the youth at Project Canoe, a Pride hike and even most recently a pilot hike with dogs, leashed of course. All of this work done by our volunteers.

I can’t tell you when I became aware of the Bruce Trail – growing up in Mississauga – the Bruce Trail was always in my vocabulary. Walking with family, hiking in high school, picking a trail from the map book for date night (yes we did that) and introducing my young children to the joys of a walk in nature.

I get asked a lot what my hiking style is – my favorite is trail work, a full day painting, snipping, hauling and pulling.  My daughter Emily has a thing for ferns so any fern hike is a hit. My son hikes like a gazelle, and all I can do is work hard to keep up with him. And my husband Dirk asked that we restart our end to end, which was paused when we started our family. I also happily iNat with my daughter’s partner Sarah. You see, family and community – that is what makes me. And as long as I am on the trail with my family and community – that is my kind of hike.
